"Could remakes be looked at through Derrida's approach to translation, as meeting a lack in the original? Derrida picks up Benjamin, saying that the source text itself always lacks something and is made more complete in translation, that it's the original which starts by calling for translation. Perhaps this provides some way of thinking about remakes which work and ones which don't - that the former are responding to an unfulfilled potential in the source film, whereas the latter aren't? I think this lies behind some really good sequels and adaptations, but would also cover things such as technological updatings of old stories."
